WHICH FIRMS ARE LIKELY TO SUFFER PRODUCT RECALLS? THE ROLES OF COMPETITION AND CONGESTION IN LEADING TO RECALLS Honourable Mention Award Recipient for the OT Division

چکیده
Managing the firm’s product line offerings is one of the most important tasks that managers undertake. The composition and quality of the products that the firm offers significantly affect its market share, reputation, and ultimately, the organization’s financial performance and prospects for survival in the market. Managing product lines, moreover, is difficult, and both development and maintenance of product lines require financial and human resources to be deployed (Carroll 1984; Sanderson and Uzumeri 1997). The uncertainty and difficulty of managing product lines occasionally results in product defects which in turn can lead to the firm suffering a product recall, which can impact both the firm’s reputation and finances (Rhee and Haunschild 2003).

A Multi-objective Transmission Expansion Planning Strategy: A Bilevel Programming Method
This paper describes a methodology for transmission expansion planning (TEP) within a deregulated electricity market. Two objective functions including investment cost (IC) and congestion cost (CC) are considered. The proposed model forms a bi-level optimization problem in which upper level problem represents an independent system operator (ISO) making its decisions on investment while in the l...
متن کاملLocating of Series FACTS Devices for Multi-Objective Congestion Management Using Components of Nodal Prices
Congestion and overloading for lines are the main problems in the exploitation of power grids. The consequences of these problems in deregulated systems can be mentioned as sudden jumps in prices in some parts of the power system, lead to an increase in market power and reduction of competition in it. FACTS devices are efficient, powerful and economical tools in controlling power flows through ...
متن کاملMarket Structure in Congestible Markets
This paper analyses market structure of industries that are subject to both positive and negative network effects. The size of a firm determines the quality of its product: when network effects are positive, a larger firm is of higher quality; when the effects are negative, a larger firm’s product is of lower quality. Consumers have heterogenous preferences towards quality (firm size), and firm...
متن کاملI’ve Been Waiting on the Railroad: The Effects of Congestion on Firm Production
Transportation networks worldwide suffer from heavy congestion. This paper provides the first estimates of congestion’s effect on the production side of the economy, combining firm survey data with traffic data from Indian Railways. Geographic variation in congestion comes from a recent wave of passenger trains which were planned according to certain rigid rules, making it possible to identify ...
متن کاملA Probabilistic Approach to Transmission Expansion Planning in Deregulated Power Systems under Uncertainties
Restructuring of power system has faced this industry with numerous uncertainties. As a result, transmission expansion planning (TEP) like many other problems has become a very challenging problem in such systems. Due to these changes, various approaches have been proposed for TEP in the new environment. In this paper a new algorithm for TEP is presented. The method is based on probabilisti...
